Development

Fisherman's Blues started out as a student project that I ended up developing further and now consider a passion project. I wanted to take the idea of a fishing minigame and push it further by including less often shown fisherman activities like crab catching.

As the only developer, I did all the art and programming myself and even tried making the game music for fun. I used this game to experiment and teach myself how to make various game systems I'd never made before, in particular the game's market system.

Challenges

Fisherman's Blues was mainly used for me to gain experience with game development, so most of my challenges included just being inexperienced or not knowing how to do something. As an example, one thing I really wanted to do but didn't know how to do was JSON Serialization in Unity; using online resources and my own trial and error, I was able to successfully add this into the game, allowing game data to be more easily edited and accessed. Likewise, I was able to successfully teach myself many new things that I then integrated into Fisherman's Blues, such as using particle systems, save data, timers, and UI design.
